We regard preventative medicine as very important at Queen Street Doctors. Below are some procedures that we recommend to our patients.

GENERAL CHECK UPS
From age 20, a regular check every few years is a very good idea. From age 40, we recommend annual medicals (from age 50 this includes prostate checks for men).

CHOLESTEROL CHECKS
This test is most important for anyone who has a family history of heart disease. If you have diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, or are a smoker, you should have regular cholesterol checks.

SKIN & MOLE CHECKS
Most New Zealanders have had a lot of sun exposure and we suggest regular skin examinations. For those with a family history of melanoma, or who have had a melanoma, this check should be done annually. Any mole or skin lesion which changes should be seen promptly.

IMMUNISATIONS / VACCINATIONS

CHILDREN
It is important that you and your family are up-to-date with your vaccinations. Routine childhood vaccinations are done at the surgery - we have a recall system to remind you when they are due.

ADULTS

  • Tetanus Boosters
These are recommended every 10 years and may be given if you have had an accident.
  • Hepatitis A & B
These can be combined or administered individually. Please discuss this with your doctor.
  • Rubella
All women of childbearing age should be vaccinated (this vaccination is usually given at school).
  • Flu Vaccines
Recommended for adult patients, especially for those over 65 years of age as well as those with certain medical conditions.
  • Pneumococcal Vaccination
Recommended for those over 65 and people with previous splenectomy, chronic illness or lung disease.
  • Travellers Vaccinations
When travelling overseas we advise that you come and see us 1-2 months (6 months if possible) before departure. We can then establish what you require.

MAMMOGRAMS
Regular mammograms are recommended for women from the age of 40 (they are free for eligible women between the ages of 45 and 69).

CERVICAL SMEARS
All women over 20 should have regular smear tests if they are/or have been sexually active.

BONE DENSITY
Women who are in, or approaching, menopause should discuss this with their doctor.
